Assessor Duties & Responsibilities

The following is intended to describe the general content of and requirements for the performance of the Assessor position and is not to be construed as an exhaustive statement of duties, responsibilities, or requirements. The duties and responsibilities of the Assessor are, but not limited to, the following:

  • Locate and identify all taxable and non-taxable properties within the Township.
  • Inventory the quantity and characteristics of the property to determine taxability.
  • Determine true market value, perform appraisals, and calculate assessed values of the property located and identified as set forth in paragraph one above.
  • Respond to inquiries or requests for assessment information from Burtchville Township and its residents.
  • At the Township hall, maintain office hours one day (a minimum of 8 hours of office time) per week and staffed by an assessor or an assessor’s assistant on a day of the week agreed to with the Township.
  • Oversee, and maintain departmental files including property records/cards, physical data, legal descriptions, addresses, address assignment, splits, and combinations of parcels, ownership transfers, homestead exemptions, etc., both hard copy (written or printout) and computer back-up on tape, disk, or CD.
  • Gather and analyze data via field inspections, which shall be in addition to the office hours set forth above, as well as perform assessment ratio studies to determine true market values of properties within the township. Regularly input data into computer database; update personal property records; and provide annual assessment notices to notify property owners of assessed values, as well as appearing/defending taxpayer appeals.
