About the Fire Department

Your Burtchville fire department consists of on-call fire fighters and services the township of Burtchville as well as assist surrounding areas as needed.

Fire Hydrants

With the winter weather, fire hydrants can become buried in heavy snow falls. If you have a hydrant near your home, do your part and clear a 3 ft path around the hydrant. Your fire department will thank you and so will your home.

Fire Chief Duties & Responsibilities

The examples of duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or logical assignment to the position.

A. Performs and/or supervises firefighting and emergency medical services activities. Plans, directs, exercises general supervision of department operations
B. Investigates/delegate responsibility to investigate the cause and origin of fires involving loss of property, injuries or death and files a report on all fires with the

National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS). Coordinates investigations with other public safety and law enforcement agencies
C. Develops plans for efficient fire ·prevention, fire suppression and life-saving services in the township, and recommendation to the Township Board relative to meeting the department’s long term needs.
D. Makes and reviews all personnel assignments within the department.
E. Develops and enforces policies and procedures.
F. Oversees the administration of the township’s fire prevention program, including inspections, code enforcement, prosecuting violations, and conducting community education programs.
G. Makes recommendations for the appointment, promotion and dismissal of fire department personnel.
H. Prepares and administers the department budget. Monitors expenditures for conforming to appropriation and purchasing regulations established by the Township Board. Adhere to Township Board rules regarding capital outlay purchases and-competitive bidding procedures. I. Reports bi-monthly to the Township Board on department activities including emergency responses, unusual circumstances.
J. Coordinates fire department activities with other municipal departments.
K. Maintains professional development by attending meetings, conferences and seminars, etc.
L. Recommends the purchase of new equipment and directs the drafting of specifications for the equipment.
M. Develops long term plans for improving and maintaining cost effective operations.
N. Delegates or completes records and reports.
0. Supervises the maintenance, repair, improvement and replacement of equipment, apparatus and property of the fire department.
P. Oversees training of department personnel.
Q. Ensures that an incident management system is used at all emergency operations (does not need to be used for basic medicals).
R. Authorizes the release of information to the press.
S. Coordinates Planned Emergency Preparedness with appropriate Governing Authority.
